Name the Cria Contest

An event in my pasture this a.m. A light fawn boy weighing 17 pounds was born at 9:30. That's his mom, Golden Shadow, standing behind him. He is still wet in this picture that was taken about 11 o'clock.
Names are always a big deal to me because it seems like there must be a perfect one. Why not have a contest? Whoever submits the name that I pick can choose $25 worth of stuff in my Etsy store.
Of course we need some rules:
1. Must be star/heavenly bodies related because our farm name is NorthStarAlpacas
2. Cannot be a name that we have already used. Residents born on the farm are: Celeste, Orion, Polaris, Mira, Lyra, Galactico, and Pollux.
3. Contest will end in 2 weeks - October 1st, and I will announce the winner here on my blog.

Goldie is telling everyone one to stay away from her baby while he's learning to stand.

Congratulations on the new little one.

How about Ganymede for a name, Gany for short.

This is what the internet says about it:
Ganymede is the seventh and largest of Jupiter's known satellites. Ganymede is the third of the Galilean moons.
In Greek mythology Ganymede was a Trojan prince of great beauty whom Zeus made cupbearer to the gods.

Aw, he's so cute! And wobbly looking!

Did he arrive on time? Perhaps "HOROLOGIUM" (meaning clock)... "horo" for short?

Or "VOLANS" just because it sounds cool. Ditto "Dorado".

What a cutie! I suggest Pavo, a constellation that's best viewed in his birth month, September. As an alternate, Alpha Pav (the constellation's only named star) sounds fun. Pavo means peacock.

How about Hercules? I'm sure he'll grow up to be handsome and strong! More information can be found here: http://www.astro.wisc.edu/~dolan/constellations/constellations/Hercules.html

How about Leo? Aw!!! I love him!!! Give him a big kiss for me.....once he's dry, of course;)

How about Draco, a constellation that is always visable from northern latitudes. In some mythologes Draco represents the dragon that guards the golden fleece. Your new little guy seems to be wearing it.

It's cool, it's hip and it's in the sky! ;-)

How about Altair? It's one of the stars in the Summer Triangle and also Aquila the Eagle. (I've always had a soft spot for Deneb, too!)

I think that fine young man would be a wonderful Lord Rosse (from Lord Rosse's Question Mark, the first noted spiral formation galaxy)

Aldebaran. One of the brightest stars in the nighttime sky. And then of course, you can "call him Al" (with apologies to Paul Simon!)

Hey, Mom! Congrats on the new little guy! So cute! I supposed I can't enter the contest since we are related, but I see you have some cool suggestions already:)

Miss you, can't wait to get together this weekend.
Love you,
T

Negumi-- It's Arabic for 'stars'.
They're all beautiful by the way!

What a cutie!

How about Golden Star, which combines an element of his mother's name with the astral aspect you are looking for.

Another option could be Milky Way, since September is supposed to be a good time to see the Milky Way. Seems appropriate for a light fawn colored animal.

I also like the name Altair, which is one of the stars of the Summer Triangle, still visible in September.

Astra is my name for the new baby...it refers to the Kansas official motto Ad astra per aspera which means "through difficulties to the stars"...which somehow makes me think of your own difficulties losing Smitty and how you have hope and a great family and a new star being born. Much love!

I feel I must add one more possible name....Galileo. :)

How about Carpo? Sure, its technically a "girl" name (daughter of Zues), but no one will know (okay, okay, some people will know). Its another moon of Jupiter (Jupiter XLVI). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carpo_(moon)

I suggest 'Qamra', meaning 'moonlit'. After all, his mama's a Golden Shadow!

How about Tycho, after the astronomer, Tycho Brahe? *grin* Tycho closely monitored the positions of Mars over many years, and his excellent research has helped many astronomers since then--even today, centuries later. Also, he was a total party animal and had a silver nose (no, seriously). You cannot beat that!

My husband's favorite star names are Alioth, Alcor & Mizar. Could be some nice boys names.

They are really lovely boys.

I have two suggestions -
Rigel, which is a star in Orion's constellation
and also
Cepheus, which is a constellation, the King, and a close cousin to Polaris, the north star.

ok, keeping my fingers crossed....

Kim said...

Ok, Maple I will jump on the bandwagon and suggest

Orion

He sure is adorable!

Kim said...

Boy, I need to slow down and take note - you have Orion...how about Arietis?

I'd love to name your little one Andromeda, for our nearest-neighbor galaxy. My stargazing (and spinning) 7-year-old is very excited! He picked the name and is crossing his fingers ...

Congrats Golden Shadow and Maple! I know what you mean about the importance of names. Those are all such wonderful suggestions, and here are mine:

Spica, which means means "ear of wheat" in honor of his lovely fawn shade. Spica is the leading star in the Virgo constellation which will line right up with his birthday.

Pleiades, which is a cluster of stars relatively close to Earth. Now it's most commonly known as the "7 sisters" but the Mayans referred to it as the "400 brothers" (there are about 400 stars in there) so it's a good boy's name :) Even cooler, we've recently seen the formation of a planet in Pleiades so maybe it's a good name for a future stud?

Congrats again and thanks for hosting such a fun contest!

Hi maple! Its bear, luke and boris's new mom!

Your new cria is so sweet! I don't know a whole ton about the different planets, but I think he looks Like a moon beam, maybe register him as golden moon beam but call him moonie for short. Enjoy him!

Jove - means jupiter

One of my kids would be named that if i had known about it before they were born.

by choosing Jove you would also be choosing jupiter which someone else picked. 2 winners with one pick. you can't beat that :)

Love,
Jeffrey Smith
